  ABOUT Medical Defence Malaysia

MDM Bhd is a company limited by guarantee, that functions as a mutual medical defence organisation run on "not-for-profit" principles, established in January 2001 by a group of Malaysian doctors. The fundamental aim of MDM Bhd is to provide all doctors in Malaysia with a security mechanism for their malpractice liability protection at competitive subscription rates. It seeks to provide more than just indemnity, but also provides defence against unmeritorious cases and defence of members' reputations.

MDM Bhd also looks to provide support in non-financial areas such as medico-legal counselling, and the development of educational resources.

The features of MDM Bhd which distinguish it from other Defence or Insurance companies are that it is a strictly non-profit organisation, established by Malaysian doctors for the purpose of assisting their colleagues. The most important feature is that MDM Bhd is a locally-based organization, using readily accessible Medical and Legal expertise. Our experts are fully conversant with local court procedures, Malaysian law, and context of medical practice and patients' characteristics in this country.

With the recent withdrawal of a major foreign medical defence organization from the Malaysian market as well as the rising incidence of malpractice litigation, a need for a reliable and reputable indigenous medical defense has become clearer and more pertinent. It is obvious that currently there is adequate medico-legal expertise available locally, both in terms of legal professionals as well as doctors fully capable of acting as expert witnesses. Thus, the Medical profession in Malaysia should phase out its dependence on foreign-based medical defence organizations which have bases of operations and medical experts located far remote from the context of Malaysian medicine.
